    The electoral symbol of Congress party is the ‘palm of a hand’ and 'tricoloured flag' which is same as the colour of Indian national flag. Congress which is the oldest party of India took part in national freedom struggle and had symbol of charkha on tricolour earlier. However, after independence things got changed and congress was allotted with a new symbol during the period when Indira Gandhi’s government was in power.
    Bhartiya Janta Party is an offshoot of Bhartiya Jana Sangha and has principles based on traditions and Indian culture. It came into being in 1980 and Election Commission of India allotted them with the symbol of a lotus flower. Its flag is of orange and green colour.
